ey BRUGLAS COLLEGE LIBRARY ae 5 Mad Hatter ) A Douglas College Newslette oe : = November 13, 1979 AN OPEN LETTER TO THE STUDENTS, STAFF, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION AND BOARD OF DOUGLAS COLLEGE ‘How do you say 'thank you' for the most stimulating and exciting ten years of your professional life? How do you share with your friends the mixture of joy and sadness that comes over you as a result of the comments made on behalf of all these groups at a special function put on on your behalf? Your thoughtfulness in arranging the special function held Thursday, September 27th is truly appreciated. The remarks you all made, both before the assembled group and in private, were reassuring and warming; the gifts you gave Margot and me will remind us forever of these special years. The beautiful West Coast Indian carving from all of you hangs on my ffice wall beside the "Honourary Membership in the Student Society" laque and "A Reality 1972" graphic work, given to me by the students of the College. I have reserved room for the 'rubbing' yet to come by hang- ing the "temporary rubbing'. The engraved beer mug from the students and the wine goblet from the faculty of a long-past "Division" are on my coffee table at work. The name-plate that sat before me at board meetings for the last ten years, with its moving inscription, sits before me at Library Board meetings where my ‘running shoe socks' cause more comment than my sock feet ever did! A beautiful "Fred Owen" vase sits in a place of honour at home, as do the remains of a vintage port and a bottle of Drambuie. An attractive plant from a faculty member adds some class to my new office -- something you'll agree my office always needed. I carry an "Honourary Lifetime Borrower's Card" to the Douglas College Library Resource Centre, and at the rate Douglas adds new campuses, I'll be able to use this no matter where I live. This letter has rambled on and has, to some of you I'm sure, border- ed on being maudlin, but I guess I should be allowed this privilege at a time like this. Thank you for the gifts; thank you for the opportunity to work with you all (both present and past members of the College) to create the best College in Canada; but thank you most of all for the friendship, support and understanding you have given me. May our paths cross often in the future. ~e.-.--George C. Wootton \@ ) Ina ee
