sports@op.douglas.be.ca Sport Shorts Coming Up Basketball The women’s team travelled to Malaspina last weekend for the provincial championships, ranked #2 in the province and looking to make the nationals. Because of their high ranking, the Royals got a bye into the semi-finals Friday, against the winner of the UCFV-UCC game on Thursday night. Friday, February 27 brought the UCFV Cascades to the Royals, who couldn't seem to get going as they fell 77-62, putting them in the bronze medal game. Carry Rogers scored 20 points and grabbed 4 rebounds and Darcy Savage had 13 points and 4 rebounds to lead the Royals. On Saturday, February 28, the Royals faced-off against the OUC Lakers in the bronze medal game. The Royals took the bronze in fine form, beating the Lakers 68-60. Stacey Reykdal had 26 points and 2 rebounds and Carrie Rogers dropped 25 points’and 14 rebounds for the Royals. For averaging 22.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in her two games, Carrie Rogers was named to the tournament all-star team. e Congratulations to Stacey Reykdal for being named first team BCCAA all-star and all-Canadian and to Carrie Rogers, who was named to the second BCCAA all-star team. ; Volleyball Thursday, February 26, was the start of the BCCAA volleyball provincials with the women’s team taking on the Capilano Blues. Douglas rolled over Capilano like they weren't even there, winning in straight sets, 15-6, 15-11 and 15-9. Also on Thursday the Royals suffered a tough five game loss to the host OUC Lakers. This loss meant that the Royals had to play a quarterfinal game on Friday against the CNC Kodiaks. The Kodiaks put up as much resistance as a group of teddy bears as Douglas crushed CNC 15-9, 15-2, 15-12 putting them in a semi-final match against hated rivals Malaspina. Douglas, riding the emotion of an early semester loss to Malaspina, stormed to an impressive 15— 11, 7-15, 15-12, 11-15, 15—9 three games to two victory. Saturday, February 28, Douglas met the OUC Lakers in the gold medal match. Douglas was almost routed in this match but managed to pull out a 15-3 win in the third game to avoid a straight sets defeat. Christine Bonish and Becki Kosinski were named to the all-tournament team. The men’s team opened the provincials on Thursday, February 26, rolling over BCIT 15-7, 15-4, 15-0 and squeaking past UCC 16-14, 6-15, 15-9, Tm nN Seger sae After slipping into the playoffs as the last seed, the men’s team had to play a quarter final match against the UCC Sun Demons if they wanted to move on. Unfortunately, Lady Luck wasn't with the Royals on this night, as they suffered a heart-breaking 85-82 loss to UCC. Jon Fast scored 19 points and grabbed 3 boards and Kevin Kundarewich dropped 15 points and 2 rebounds on the Sun 15-8, 15-5 to get into the gold medal match. The gold medal match was less 14-16, 21-19. The Royals continued their blitzkrieg of their BCCAA opponents on Friday, February 27, beating Camosun College 15-13, 13-15, than a walk for the Royals as they faced off against the UCC Sun Demons. The Royals took the Sun Demons, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12, 7-15 and 26-24 to Demons. team BCCAA all-star team.
