President’s Report It was my pleasure to participate in a number of tremendously successful technology sessions at the Spring Break Conference, in particular the sessions by IBM and Maricopa. Special thanks and appreciation go to the organizing committee, and specifically to Gillies Malnarich, John Blackwell and Susan Greathouse. This month I also attended the International Consortium for Economic and Educational Development held at Laredo Community College in Texas, where I was re-elected as Secretary to the Board. Also in attendance at the conference were Al Atkinson, Tad Hosoi and Janet Knowles. Locally, I met with the Chambers of Commerce for Burnaby and Coquitlam, and continued discussions with BC Tel and the Coquitlam School District regarding the concept of the Virtual District. V3L 5B2 Internally, I met with Social Sciences faculty and Counselling Department staff, among others. I continue to meet with Bill Bergquist as we strive to clarify and define my relationship with the Board and Foundation. I also had the pleasure of attending the Foundation Awards Ceremony and the Athletic Awards Banquet. I was very impressed with our superb scholars and athletes, and especially noted the respect and admiration extended to Betty Lou Hayes, our Director, Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness. This month I also had the opportunity to meet with all CEOs and Gerry Wouters to review the newly reconfigured Ministry of Education, Skills and Training. Preliminary budget information was provided by the Deputy Minister. In addition, I held my second President’s Forum in the Boardroom. It was very well attended and the feedback was both positive and gratifying. | Notes from the Thomas Haney Centre Effective March |, Heather Anderson will be fulfilling the campus administrative responsibilities at the Thomas Haney Centre. Heather will be combining these responsibilities with her academic advising position at the Maple Ridge campus until August 1, 1996. On Friday, March 8, the Student Society sponsored a wonderful display of unique talent by local women in celebration of International Women’s Day. Many students, staff and faculty from the college, high school and community residents took advantage of the opportunity to view the many forms of art, architecture and crafts displayed at this event. Congratulations to Gayle Ryan and the members of the Maple Ridge Student Society for hosting a very successful day. Education Council highlights The Education Council is one of the two governing bodies of Douglas College (the other is the College Board). Its membership includes faculty, staff, students and administrators, who meet once a month to decide curriculum matters and discuss other educational issues. To encourage wider awareness of the Council and the issues it takes on, INside will report regularly on meeting highlights. Full meeting minutes are posted outside the Library each month, and Council Chair Roberta Bend can be reached at local 5384 for more information. Instructional Computing Following an item from last month’s meeting, concern over responsibility for instructional computing was brought forward by Science and Mathematics. Susan Hunter-Harvey recognized the ongoing concern over this issue and confirmed that an external consultant will be hired to conduct an assessment. This study is scheduled for completion by summer, 1996. Institute Based Training (IBT) Ted James and Linda Forsythe made a presentation on this provincially-funded project, which aims to help Income Assistance recipients gain access to post- secondary programs. Discussion centered around possible quota systems for programs and disciplines. British Columbia Open University John McKendry reported that working documents, including terms of reference and membership, are being developed for feedback from representative institutions and their constituent groups. Both the Joint Working Group and the Presidents’ Group are pleased with progress made so far. Creation of faculty groups will be considered around degree-track programs, especially “niche” degrees which are unique to the Open University. “High Hopes” and New Stats A document entitled “High Hopes: A Study of the Goals of Students and Prospective Students at Dougals College” was presented for council review. In addition, Chair Roberta Bend introduced another study, “Profile of Douglas College Transfer Students Admitted to SFU,” which she noted contains statistics that may have an impact on the College’s strategic plans. |
