I would like to add to the list of approaches. Here are a few of interest to me: May I take you to counseling? May I help you realize that you have some worth to society? How can I make you feel better about yourself? Rather than throwing money at them, offer to buy them a sand- wich. Better still; take them to one of the many free servic- es support group places that are available down there. Do not go down there unarmed, always carry a list of support group places and the times they are opened. As for personal experience it makes me feel good to help oth- ers. I personally find that the odour of money dissipates with the spending of it, but the essence of sharing and caring remains forever not only in the receiver, but in the giver also. I hope that these can be added to the list of approaches so that more people will have more choices as to the type of “FUN” they wish to participate in the dilapidated downtown eastside. Sincerely, Robert Shields Any Questions? Reach me at: bobshields@canada.com, Regarding “Summer School Blues” by Kerry Evans (May2003) It really ticks me off when people sign up for courses that they don’t need or even want just so they can avoid getting a job and paying their student loan. Not only do the taxpayers (including me) end up subsidiz-— ing your lazy ass, you end up taking seats away from people who really need those courses for their diploma or degree. Perhaps before finishing that second diploma; you should figure out what you really want to do with your life, and stop wasting everyone else’s time and money.
