Bring your class, but please register by calling 5440. the other press Diversity Week at Douglas College is planned around the International Day to Eliminate Racial Discrimination which is observed annually on March 21st. On that day in 1960, police in Sharpeville, South Africa opened fire and killed 69 peo- ple at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws.” Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the United Nations’ General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. This message is more important today than ever! The Douglas College Diversity Committee invites all members of the College community to join us in marking Diversity Week 2003. We hope you will join us at the interesting and stimulating events described in this flyer. And, this year, we are calling on every member of the College community to find a way to mark Diversity Week in your classroom, your field base, your department or faculty meetings, and at your lunch table. Here are some ways you can participate: Diversity Discussion Question of the Day Watch for a Diversity Question of the Day on tables in the cafeteria & on bulletin boards. Classroom Activities Plan to set aside time during Diversity Week for a classroom activity or a discus- sion about diversity. Department/Faculty-wide Activities Plan diversity-related activities for your field base and departmental meetings. Watch for a Resource Folder of suggested activities — coming to your Neighbourhood Copy Machine soon. Diversity Week Highlight Mary-Woo Sims—a guest lecture, March 19, Wed., 12—2p.m., Boardroom (4920) NW What are individual rights? What are collective rights? Is there a difference? Mary- Woo Sims, former Chief BC Human Rights Commissioner, shares her personal and professional reflections on these questions.
