Education Council highlights To encourage wider awareness of the Education Council and the issues it deals with, INside will report regularly on meeting highlights. Full meeting minutes are posted monthly outside the Library, and Council Chair Roberta Bend can be reached for more information at local 5384. At its April 15 meeting, the Education Council re-elected Roberta Bend as Chair by acclamation for an additional year—from September, 1996 to August, 1997. Student Society elections also provided two student representatives to serve on the Council next year: Jaimie McEvoy (re-elected) and Raminder Athwal. Ted James and Joy Holmwood were congratulated on their appointments as Dean of Student Development and Dean of Health Sciences, respectively. The Financial Services Studies Citation Program was approved for delivery by the Department of Commerce and Business Administration in fall, 1996. A 14-point proposal for the Applied Environmental Studies program as an Advanced Certificate program—to be offered at the Pinetree Way campus—was received for review and approval. Mia Gordon reviewed the proposal development process, and commended Val Schaefer and Susan Smythe for their hard work on this project. Tim Shireman brought forward a notice of motion regarding the continuation of the Diploma in General Studies. The Diploma was recognized as an important option for students and as an employer- recognized credential. It was pointed out, however, that the College must differentiate between credit and non- credit courses currently offered toward the Diploma as well as determine which courses could be considered for university transfer. This notice of motion will be considered in the May Education Council meeting. Bill Main reported that so far responses to his request for feedback on Residency Credit policy have been received from Health Sciences, CFCS, English, Humanities and Music. He urged all other program areas to respond so that a report can be presented to Council in May. Sharon in style For her birthday on April 13, Payroll Supervisor Sharon Conboy got royal treatment. Someone sent a limo, took her for lunch at Restaurant des Gitans and then took her for a drive around Queens Park. Someone else created a brand new screen-saver on her computer: “Fifty’s not old if you’re a tree.”
