For that reason, it provides, through its curriculum and facilities, opportunities for the College to be a major community centre for: : | : GS c i. academic and occupational, DOUGLAS COLLEGE iii. cultural, and iv. social activities. Facilities are developed in consultation with local govern- ments and community groups. The College views the development of a society of self- teachers as the ultimate goal of organized learning. It therefore works to lessen the dependence of students on the College as an institution. THEME STATEMENT FOR DOUGLAS COLLEGE PROGRAMS: THE COLLEGE PLANS TO RETAIN: A. CORE PROGRAM: 1. Community Programming - a mix of funded, self-funded, or co-operatively funded programs. 2. Quality two-year academic programs. 3. Gareer/technical - Business, Health, and Human Service rograms. 4. Adult Basic Education. NON-CORE PROGRAM: 1. First-year academic programs at Maple Ridge. 2. Post-basic diploma/certificate programs - all post-basic to be contracted via Ministry of Education, or with concerned groups/employers. THE COLLEGE PLANS TO DEVELOP (PROGRAMS): 1. New technical programs in pre-technical and lower level engineering, with special focus on the Fraser River and Burrard Inlet industries.
