A Tommy : the TUNE TWISTER 14 ake FE S Ti ae) with aT By Matthew Visser ell it is official, Glee has come to Douglas College. Last Monday, November 29, 2010 marked the very first Glee Club performance at Douglas College New Westminster Campus and if you were one of the few lucky ones who got to see the performance you were not disappointed. The show had a cast of eight performers singing ten songs which varied from “Come Fly With Me” by Michael Buble sung very well by Greg Burke, to “Somebody to Love” by Queen, and “Under Pressure” and “Any Way You Want It” by Journey. Now you are probably thinking the same thing I thought when I was told Douglas College has a Glee Club, what? And why? Well, I don’t know the answer to these questions. Probably the best answer is, why not? People have always used this reason. This is probably the reason why the hit TV show Glee has been allowed to be on TV in the first place and why so many people have fallen in love with it. I must admit that I myself have watched the. show and been impressed by the performer’s talents and that the show actually has good writers working for it. But I will never admit to being a Glee fanatic compared to some people out there who are die hard Glee fans. In fact this semester I have not had the time to watch a TV show every week and watch a story line grow and begin to care what happens to the characters. Oh, how I have missed Dr. House and his insults and satiric wit. When did the idea of watching a group of teenagers or young adults act as teenagers dance and sing and have high school problems become something that is needed to watch? I can go to a day care or a kindergarden and watch this. In just one season it was nominated for nineteen Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, six Satellite awards and fifty-seven other awards, with wins including the 2010 Golden Globe award for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and Emmy awards for Jane Lynch, guest-star Neil Patrick Harris and Murphy’s direction of the pilot episode. Obviously this show is going to be on TV for a while with all of this happening to it in just one season. But one thing I do enjoy about this show is Jane Lynch who plays Sue Sylvester, the very pompous and arrogant character who makes me and thousands of others laugh. She is the shit disturber who loves to ruin the other characters lives; the antagonist whose goal in her life is to destroy Glee clubs. Jane plays this character perfectly and should be recognized for her role in Glee as making the show better. Glee is becoming something that is expanding and is grabbing hold of all people who can either sing and dance or just enjoy watching an entertaining TV show. Glee is a great thing which is allowing singers to come together and be around people who enjoy singing and dancing. And who knows, someone might be the next Michael Buble or Celine Dion out there and it was the Douglas College Glee club who found them. The Douglas College Glee Club is over for now until the winter semester but will begin again in January meeting every Thursday at the New Westminster campus in room 3285.
