PHOTO BY LAURA KELSEY Opinions The Benefits of a Dog By Garth McLennan D. you consider yourself a dog- lover? If not, why not? What isn’t there to love about dogs? Well, I guess there are a few things. They smell bad sometimes, you have to clean up after them, and some of them shed. However, all of those things are far outweighed by the positives of dogs. When it comes to a good companion and friendship, you’d be hard pressed to find a person who treats you with more love and admiration than a dog—that is, if you treat him right. Despite common misconception, dogs aren’t naturally vicious or violent creatures. The humans who are charged to care for them make them that way after maltreatment, neglect and abuse. No matter what the breed or size of the dog, if you show them the love and warmth that they desire, they'll be loyal to you for life. Another great thing about dogs is their jovial, happy nature. Rain or shine, day or night, they are always ready to play, and are pleased when you come home. It doesn’t matter if you’d had the worst day in the world, your dog will be happy to see you. Dogs are also _ incredibly emotionally perceptive. They can tell when you are happy or sad, and often act accordingly. When you are upset, they will simply sit with you be quietly, and when you are happy or excited they’ll be more than happy to join in the fun. What most people don’t understand when they buy a new dog is that dogs are not impulse purchases. Before getting one, you should think long and hard about whether or not you are committed to having an animal in your house, if you have enough space (a cooped up environment is not good for a dog of any size), and if you have the time and patience to teach and train your dog. Many people rush into buying a dog without doing the proper research and regret it later. They don’t know that dogs need constant love and attention, that they can’t be left alone for long periods of time, they need plenty of exercise, and that they are often require at least a decade of a commitment. If you treat a dog properly and show it the love and care that it deserves, then you will have a life long friend and companion. They will follow you anywhere and protect you for as long as they can. Dogs have the ability to love unconditionally, without regard to the situation at all. I once saw a sign that sums it up perfectly: Be the person your dog thinks you are.
