COLLEGES IN CLOSE 4-WEST BADMINTON FINISH AGAINST ALBERTA AT LETHBRIDGE -- ONE GOLD MEDAL AND A BRONZE OUT OF FIVE The blood curdling victory cry of the bull ape rising from beneath.the stands of the Lethbridge Sportsplex Saturday March 6 struck terror into the hearts of all and signified the notching of a Gold Medal for Terry Beitel and Bob Johnson of Douglas College in Men's Doubles Play at the Four Western Province's Badminton Championships. Competition consisted of triple round robin play between B.C., Alberta, Manitoha§ and Saskatchewan. , Bob and Terry were untroubled by all but the Alberta Mt. Royal College pair of Jeff Child from Regina and Issarel Ratanasgu from Baukok. The Douglas pair took the first match 15-8, 15-13 then fell to their Mt. Royal opponents 16-18, 15-4 and 4-15 in the second, to even the contest. Their opponents had been effective in rushing the net on service and had profited from a comparatively stationaryg stand-and-slug-it-out type game that Bob and Terry had allowed to develop. The third round saw Terry and Bob scoring consistently with the flick serve which sent their opponents scurrying back, and with excellent drops and smashes which kept the Albertan's on the move and off balance. The score for this match: 15-12, 15-8. It was close, but Bob and Terry were in control. Their victory is a tribute to skill and dedication. They were runners up in Saskatoon last year and have been honing up their game ever since for this occasion. In Ladies Singles play Buryl Palmer of Douglas placed third for the Bronze.Medal in her first appearance for B.C. Buryl consistently beat her Manitoba rival 11-2, 11-8; 11-0, 11-3; 11-8, 11-0 and scored another match victory against the Albertan 3-11, 11-9 and 11-5. Buryl was probably the best play maker in this event and will be a force in '77. Susan Allen of Saskatchewan's Wascara Community College took the Gold.
