Lightning Seeds is comprised of Ian Broudie and Simon Rogers, (hmmm) with some studio help from their friends, including Alison Moyet, who sings background vocals on most tracks. What more can I say? This album is not unlike other British synthesizer pop album that has come out in the past ten years. Not without its charms, but still sounding an awful lot like The Pet Shop Boys. -Trent Ernst The Other Press When I attended the Vancouver Opera’s performance of Benjamin Britten’s 1945 opera Peter Grimes, | honestly did not know what to expect. I mean, I’ve sung a few of his choral pieces, and I’ve heard some of his other works, but I was not familiar with any of his operas. Having of- - Music from the Leg- ends Project Various Artists cd | am an Eagle The music on this tape is from a larger project in which native actors retell legends between musical selec- tions. The titles have that North Ameri- can Native sound, such as Wenebeg and Seven Generations, the two best songs on this tape, but the music is just a col- lection of soft-rock by First Nations musicians. Only occasional chanting on some tracks ( Midnight Strongheart) and lyrics hint that this is North Ameri- can Indian music. There is a variety of soft-rock, from relaxing instrumentals to country- rock. There are two songs done in soothing native tongue (Cree and Oddawa) and the tape cover translations proves these songs to be spiritually up- lifting. Most of the songs are about Indi- ans, some are for Indians and one , Jn- dian Giver, is a Moheekan singing to , I guess, anyone not Native: basically showing anger at their (non-Native) ancestors for coming to North America and problems in the past, present and future. This album is nothing spectacular and unless you’re a fan of John James Stewart, who conceived the album, played on many of the selections, pro- duced and arranged it or need a soft- rock album in your musical collection I wouldn’t fret about missing it. - Charlotte Holst fered you this little confession, I must now tell you that this opera was one of the most impressive artistic experi- ences that I have ever had the privi- lege to experience. At first, I thought that | would give you a basic plot synopsis, but in- stead suffice to say that Peter Grimes is a story about a man who is at odds with his world, struggling to improve his situation, but constantly coming up against great obstacles. While it is true that what Peter does is horrible, one cannot help but pity him for what he does. The true ‘villains’ - if that word may be used here - are the members of the Borough itself. Among its mem- bers are a Methodist preacher who is a drunkard and a womanizer; Auntie, the landlady of the local tavern, whose nieces are little more than whores; and Mrs. Snedley, a widow who is addicted to laudanum and is ultimately the woman who informs on Grimes to the rest of the Borough. Perhaps the great- est moment of hypocrisy occurs when the Borough can be heard singing ‘the Borough’s standards must be main- tained.’ Perhaps the best way to sum up Peter Grimes is that it is an opera full / \ XK Be coisa: T S About Peter Grimes Sean P Veley gets down and dirty to bring back the scoop on Vancouver Opera's new production of dualities, of opposing forces con- stantly at odds with each other: Peter at odds with his situation; the Bor- ough, full of hypocrites and liars, viewing its actions as for the greater good. Even the scoring of the music itself contains elements of this sense of tension, with the orchestra acting at times as its own independent musical idea, rather than merely accompany- ing the singers on stage. Canadian tenor Ben Heppner is amazing as Peter Grimes, showing a wide range of emotions on stage. Watching him on stage, it is little won- der that he is one of the fastest rising stars on the international opera scene today. Patricia Racette as Ellen Orford, a local schoolteacher who tries to help Peter, is no less impressive, showing both a strong stage presence and great musical talents. Benjamin Britten’s opera, Peter Grimes, is the story of an outsider ina small fishing community; it is a story of abuse and persecution; it is a story of injustice and unrequited love. It is also one of the finest operas you will ever have the privilege of hearing. If you missed it, don’t panic: CBC Stereo taped it for future broadcast on Saturday Afternoon at the Opera.
