the Other Press April 18, 1989 Awards Banquet A Big Hit by Brett D. Bonderud Douglas College’s main cafeteria played host to the Annual Athletic Banquet on Friday April 7th. That night, players and sup- porters from all of D.C.’s sports teams gave themselves a well deserved pat on the back as awards were handed out’to athletes who helped our College become #1 in British Columbia. Chris Johnson from the Douglas College Sports Institute M C.’d the evening with is own special humour and charm. (Chris also received one of three (Bill Day and Dean of Student ser- vices Al Atkinson were given the other two) sweatshirts that were made in recognition of Douglas College’s basketball teams having earned the #1 spot in B. C. Other guests in attendance included board member Myrna Popove, Chris McKee (Student Society), Rory Kirstein (hockey) and Betty Lou Hayes. The night though, belonged to the athletes. In total, forty-one native carv- ings set on wooden plaques were given out as awards. Starting off with the badminton team, Paul Meyer was voted Most Valuable Player. For Best Rookie, Kelley ong achieved the honour, and in e Most Improved slot, the award as presented to Brian Robinson. Next, the hockey team had the distinction of receiving the most awards. Captain Allan Wall, won MVP and also an All-Conference award. The Top Scorer was Shawn Hokanson, Top Rookie Frank Pakozdy and All-Conference win- ner Steve Adrian took Best Offen- sive Defenceman. For Defensive Defenceman, Darren Battersby, Most Inspirational, Glen Bulawka and for the most dedication towards the team, Tony Troniak and Matt Popowitz share the award. Most Sportsmanlike went to Frank Pakozby and Darren Battersby. Four awards were given out to the Men’s Volleyball team. Dean Witter received Most Outstanding and All Conference, Most Im- proved went to Brian Koverchuk and Most Inspirational was awarded to Ted Richards. Sandra Boffo of the women’s team received MVP, Lesley Wilson, Most Improved, Most Sportswomanlike, Lisa Horvath. The Unsung Hero award was given to Sue Beaudoip and Sue Sharp was presented an All-Conference Award. Our #1 basketball teams also won many awards as two athletes, Andrea Jackson and Glen Cote earned the top Female and Male Athlete awards for this year. Jack- son, (along with Ethel Atle) as well as Cote earned MVP and All-Con- ference Honours. The Best Offen- sive Player award for womens bas- ketball team was presented to Claudia Zamprogno, for Best Defensive Player, Jana Gibson, Most Inspirational, Dalllaw Jor- genson Rookie Of The Year went Handball Team by Keith Olstrom The Douglas College Handball eam played a furious season, en- ding in a 4th palce finish at the B.C. hampionships. During the first semester a lack of interest forced e team to postphone its start, until he second semester when they eturned with new energy and a ew coaching staff led by Mike Stephenson and Dario Drinovic. e handball team faced an uphill battle to secure a place in the playoffs and despite a late entrance n the 88/89 season, the team did manage to play enough games to give them a taste of what to expect in Prince George, the location of the B.C. Championships. By the end of the tournament emotions were low and disappoint- ment high when Douglas finished 4th place and their friendly rivals, the Burnaby Beavers finished 2nd place. West Fraser of Prince George beat out the Beavers for Ist place. Douglas College’s spirits were lifted when Barkley Pitkethly won the M.V.P. for the seniors division. For the men’s basketball, more awards as Sean Beasley was presented with Top Rebounder, Top Offensive Player, Phil Tapley, Top Defensive Player, Willis Par- nell and for Most Improved, Matt Wubs. Douglas College’s Golf and Wrestling teams took one award D.C.’s Top atheletes and MVPs of their basketball teams: Glen Coteand Andrea Jackson each as Brian Killins and Todd Ket- teringham both earned MVP status respectively. Our seldom recog- nized (but equally important) Curl- ing team awarded the Corn Broom Award to Carey Blackburn. Besides the player awards, two special awards were presented. Student Intramural Co-ordinator Mike Pol and Minor Officials Co- ordinator Rebecca Smith were Finishes Fourth ended the season with words of op- tomism for his players, "When we can come into a season six weeks to the end and finish 4th, and have our junior player win the senior M.V.P., I think team handball at Douglas is guaranteed to produce a top finishing team next season." The Douglas handball team has two more tournaments which they are considering entering, one in Alber- ta, the other in Mexico. The Handball Team would like to thank all who came out and sup- ported them at their dance at Chicago Tonight and hope to have even more support next season.
