No trio demonstrates this more strongly than suc- cessful filmmakers Mina Shum and Colleen Leung and cut- ting-edge video artist Paul Wong. The three will be featured in “From Shanghai Alley to Tinseltown”, a panel exploring Chinese-Canadian portrayal and expression in media arts. They will discuss their work, their mentoring relationships with young up-and-coming artists, and tools to succeed in the industry while maintaining integrity and cultural identity. The evening is the result of a collaboration between the Chinatown Heritage Alley Project, Moving Images Distribution and the Vancouver Public Library and will be held on Wednesday, February 5th at 7:30 p.m. at the Library’s Central Branch (350 West Georgia) in the Alice Mackay Room. Mina Shum’s latest film Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity has its commercial release on Friday, February 7th. Her first feature Double Happiness garnered prizes in Vancouver, Torino, Italy and Berlin, and made its U.S. pre- miére at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, she is a graduate of UBC's film school. Colleen Leung is a filmmaker and award-winning broadcast journalist. Born on Vancouver Island, she has worked with China Central Television in Beijing, CBC Radio, BCTV and the Knowledge Network. Her 2001 documentary, Letters from Home was a personal journey into her family’s his- tory and secrets. Paul Wong, in his own words, is “pushing buttons and making art.” In 1992, he won the Bell Canada award for Video Art, and in 1995, the National Gallery of Canada featured a retrospective of his work. He has exhibited in New York, Tokyo, the UK Western Europe, Mexico, Chile, the prestigious Institute of Contemporary Art in Hong Kong and, most recently, the Vancouver Art Gallery. These three artists will explore the portrayal of the Chinese community in North American media, past and present, unearthing some of the early stereotypes: exotic, diabolical and mysterious. They will discuss the ways they have addressed their own history, culture and identity to transcend these stereotypes. The Chinatown Heritage Alley Project, an initiative of the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, promotes the history and evolution of Chinatown in Vancouver. At Shanghai Alley, they established the Chinatown Heritage Alley—Allan Yap Circle, with its Han Dynasty Bell and history panels outlining life in early Chinatown. A tri-lingual website details this history featuring the lives of some the earliest influ- ential pioneers: . Moving Images Distribution has distributed independent media works since 1979 when a group of talented local filmmakers founded the organization to increase the profile of their work. Today, it is the largest dis- tributor of Canadian independent film and video in western Canada, and carries many documentaries on Asian-Canadians. Additional support for this evening has been provided by the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, the Department of Canadian Heritage and CBC Television.
