TO: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD June 23, 1988. = 3= External Matters - Education (Cont'd.) Another matter surfaced at the Council of Principals meeting that gives me considerable concern - the possibility of some difficulties developing in the area of transfer relationships with the Universities. The Post-Secondary Coordinating Committee, which has acted as the clearing house for inter-institutional arrangements, and problem resolution at the institutional level, has been eliminated by Ministry decision. The matter is being addressed as a matter of some urgency, by the Council of Principals and the Deans of the Institution. Internal Matters - Education Our graduation was held on June 9th, with our feature speaker being Andre Molnar - the well-known residential developer. Mr. Molnar is on the Advisory Committee that is developing the College's new Residential Construction Management Program. On Wednesday, June 22nd, the Annual General Meeting of the Douglas College Foundation was held. The Foundation's endowment is approaching $600,000, and experienced a 40% increase during the last fiscal year. At the meeting, volunteers from the College and the community were honored with special presentations. I am pleased to inform the Board of new community members on the Foundation Board. These include Mr. Jim Glanville, Manager of Scott Paper, Ms. Shirley Piper, Homemaker; Mr. Baj Puri, Irly Distributors, Ltd.; Mr. Ted Jang, Alumni President; Ms. Karen Downey, President, Douglas College Student Society; and Mr. Scott Nelson, Student Society. During the past month, the Student Society, the Faculty Association, and the BCGEU have been briefed on the College's budget estimates. Because of the uncertainty of the supplementary funding situation, the administration has been unable to prepare a final Expenditure Plan. This is still being worked on. As soon as it is developed, the three associations will be briefed in detail. I expect that at the next Board meeting, we will have an Expenditure Plan to present. Two meetings have been held with Mr. Duncan MacRae, of the Ministry of Advanced Education & Job Training, to discuss the implications of the reorganization of the B.C. Institute of Technology, and Douglas College's relationship with BCIT. In the near future, the Ministry will be contacting the College on this matter with formal proposals.
