40 years come and gone! Douglas College turns the big 4—0 with a week of celebrations eee ea 40 Ye — 1970-2010 Tanya Colledge staff reporter rty years ago, Douglas College welcomed its first students in the fall of 1970. This September, the college will celebrate this milestone by acknowledging the past 40 years with a series of events for students, employees, alumni and friends. The festivities will begin on September 18", and will be held at both the David Lam and the New Westminster campus. David Lam will once again be the host of the 2" Annual Fall Fair, which will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010. This family- oriented event for the Tri-Cities community includes activities for kids, and a Marketplace featuring the Coquitlam Farmer’s Market and other local vendors. Both campuses will also host a self- employment program marketplace (David Lam on Tuesday, September 21 and at New Westminster on Wednesday September 22), where students can check out a variety of local products and services featuring business owners who got their start in the Douglas College self employment program, Also on 4 Wednesday at the New Westminster campus, stop by the gymnasium for an afternoon of sports you won’t soon forget, where teams will play a three-sport mini-tournament (basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer). There will be great prizes for the winners and for best team outfits. Former Douglas music instructor Henry Waack will perform a free concert on Thursday, September 23 in New Westminster, while the Douglas College alumni basketball games will take place on the Saturday. The celebrations wrap-up on Friday, September 24, with a homecoming party! From 5-9pm, everyone is invited to partake in an evening of fabulous food, drinks, music, and prizes. In addition, everyone who RSVPs to the Homecoming event before September 3 will be entered in a draw to win a Flip Video camcorder! Of course, the college would not be able to host such events without the generous time donated by volunteers. There is still plenty of help needed, so if you have a couple of hours to spare, visit the Douglas College website for information on how you can volunteer during the special anniversary week, and give back to the school. To RSVP for the homecoming, or for any other information, visit the college’s website, or the Douglas College alumni Facebook group for details. The innovative teaching technique reduces the usual four hour lecture period to a mere two hours per week with the rest of the lecture material available online. This means that students taking Hybrid Introductory Chemistry only need to come to class on campus once a week. The hybrid method combines classroom interaction with the modern immediacy of the technological world.
