INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / FEBRUARY 6, 1990 Athletics Update WOMEN’S BASKETBALL This weekend the Royals women’s basketball team con- tinued its Jekyll and Hyde ap- proach to league play. Friday, Jan. 26, Douglas travelled to Capilano to play the 3-2 Blues. Royals (1-2) watched Capilano come out hot to lead 10-0 and run it up 23-6 against the Royals before the Royals turned it around. Full court pressure by Douglas helped them tie the game at 47 halfway through the second period, and emerge with a 62-54 vic- tory over Capilano. Crystal Caldwell led with 27 and Lorraine Denis followed with 14. Saturday night Douglas Royals travelled to Fraser Valley College to meet the winless Cascades. It was a hard-fought game that seesawed back and forth until the final five minutes, when things seemed to all go in favour of the Cascades. Royals fell 79-70, with Caldwell leading with 18, Denis with 14, and Carrie Carlsen with 12 points. MEN’S BASKETBALL Friday, Jan. 26 the Royals beat Capilano 93-62. Ted Vanderwal had 25 points, 3 assists and 7 rebounds, and Max Von Trebra had 18 points and 10 rebounds. On Saturday, Jan. 27 at Fraser Valley, the Royals lost. The half- time score was 35-44 for Fraser Val- ley. The final score was Fraser Valley 84, Douglas College 82. Dave Gill scored 18 points, and Ted Vanderwal had 17 points. ROYAL EFFORT Douglas College Womens’ Vol- leyball team had an outstanding road trip. The Royals travelled to Castlegar to play cross town rivals Capilano College and Trinity Western University, as well as home town Selkirk College in a series of matches over the weekend. Coach Neil McInnes credits the victories to “a total team effort”. Nicole Hen- nelly, Sue Sharp, Shawna King and Gabriela Boratto all received all star nominations for their play. The Douglas women defeated Trinity Western for the first time in league play, downing T.W.U. 16-14, 15-9, 15-12. Selkirk College went down in defeat 15-7, 15-7, 15-4. Despite losing the opening game to Capilano College 12-15, the Royals fought back to take the next 3 games 16-14, 15-6, 15-11. The Royals next home game is Feb. 10th against Columbia Bible College. On Saturday, January 27th, the Douglas College Men’s Volleyball Team played at Trinity Western University. Nick Blackman, Steve Levesque and Brian Koverchuk played consistently well. Douglas played Malaspina College first, winning the first game 15-9, losing the second 14-16, and then winning the next two games with scores of 15-12 and 15-8. Against T.W.U., Douglas lost game #1 10-15, then went on to win three straight games, with scores of 15-12, 15-3, and 15-10. @
