Amelia Douglas Gallery joint exhibit GreenLinks '99: Creating green in the concrete jungle and An interrupted panorama: an installation revealing selected views of the Fraser River paintings by Phyllis Greenwood August 17 to September 17 Artist's reception and talk September 9 4:30-7:30pm Virginia Chisholm It was with great sadness that College employees learned of the passing of their friend and colleague, Virginia Chisholm, on July 17, 1999. Virginia, Director of Learning Resources at the College, worked as a public services librarian before the Douglas College/Kwantlen split, and as the Campus Librarian at the New Westminster Campus before becoming Director in 1981. She was also instrumental in the development of the Library Technician program at Langara College. The Library will hold a memorial service in September to celebrate Virginia’s life and mourn her passing. Please watch for further announcements regarding a date and time. Not So Life’s a Beach It’s a dream come true for retired Student Services’ Gloria Kummerfield and hubby, Warren. After many years of vacationing up at their place on North Shuswap Lake, they are now going to make it their permanent home. She thanks all her friends at the College for their good wishes. 60/40 Winners The 60/40 winner for May is Renate Brown from Facilities. She wins $778.80 while student aid increases by $519.20. Paul Biscop of Humanities & Social Sciences - Anthropology is June's 60/40 lottery winner. Paul takes home $770.40 while student aid increases by $513.60. Babies, bells and good wishes in CFCS ECE Instructor Elva Reid has now made it official — retirement! We've heard this before from Briefly Elva and with all her community work, traditional retirement seems like a long way offt ECE Instructor Christine Scott gave birth to her first child, William James Harrison, on May 27. Wedding bells rang for CYCC Instructor Jennifer Davidson on June 19. After a honeymoon in Italy the newlyweds will make their home in Houston, Texas. Lifelong Learning This June, PLAR’s Carol Ebner Howorth graduated from the Academy for Leadership Training and Development, a training program created in conjunction with the Chair Academy in Mesa, Arizona. Congratulations Carol! Sandy McLeod, CFCS Technician, recently returned from Washington where she Graduation ‘99 June 10 was a proud day for these nursing graduates, as well as all graduates, their friends and families and College employees. Just a few of our outstanding grads include valedictorians Frank Caputo (Criminology), Ron Ostrum (Therapeutic Recreation), and Jennifer Sinclair (Hotel and Restaurant management). The Lieutenant Governor's Silver Medal was awarded to Catherine Dimzon who completed the Office Administration Program, Legal Secretary option with an overall Grade Point Average sol of 4.04 out of a possible 4.33, while the Governor General’s Bronze medal went to Omanie Garnet Elias who completed the Stagecraft Program with an overall Grade Point Average of 4.17 out of a possible 4.33. Foundation establishes special endowments The Foundation is very excited to be in the position next year of celebrating both the College’s 30" . anniversary and the new millennium. In honour of this unique occasion and to recognize College supporters, the Foundation is establishing special commemorative endowment funds. New endowment funds set up from July 1, 1999 to Dec 31, 2000 with a minimum balance of $5000 will receive special designation. Contributions between $5000 and $9,999 are designated 30 Anniversary funds. Those that will receive the Year 2000 designation will be established with contributions in the range of $10,000 to $14,999. The Millennium Designation is reserved for those funds of $15,000 and over. Donations from $15,000 to $24,999 are silver patrons. Gold patrons are $25,000 to $49,999 and Honourary patrons are those who donate $50,000 and over. Please drop by the Amelia Douglas Gallery to view the wonderful poster collection. Playing for kids On Friday July 9 the Finance department held their first annual Bocce Ball Tournament. Winners Dale Picketts and Patrick Mulvihill donated their winnings to Children’s Hospital. Busy Retirement Susan Fraser recently retired from the ECE program. Susan is a long term and well loved instructor at the College and has recently completed a book entitled Authentic Childhood: Experiencing the Reggio Emelia Approach in the Classroom, available August 15. Author, Author Jan Humphrey travels to Boston this summer for a book signing to launch her new book at an interpreting convention. Textbooks for the sign language interpreting field are limited, so it is anticipated that Jan’s book, Decisions? Decisions! A Practical Guide for Sign Language Professionals will be widely accepted. A move for PNUR The administration of the Department of Psychiatric Nursing has been moved to Health Sciences with Joy Holmwood as the Dean and Lexi MacDonald as the supervisor for the two BCGEU members, Leah Ponting and Laura McDonald, affected by the move. Employee Moves In Senior Admin, Finance and Administration Division, Maureen McGee is the new administrative assistant. In Printing, Steve Fowler is the new Duplicator Operator, while in Systems Zeny Nielsen moves from auxilliary to regular as Clerk and Michele Perry takes over the Computer Support Assistant position. In DLS, Tanya Kucey is the new Graphic Designer II and in Student Development Carolyn Jerome moves from auxilliary to regular on August 23rd as the Women's Centre Co-Ordinator. In the Registrar’s Office Jennifer Whitlock moves from auxilliary to regular as Information Services Assistant (ISA), Joni Hunter moves from the mail room to ISA, Deb Jackson moves from auxilliary to regular as ISA, Carol Charles moves from Thomas Haney Campus to ISA, Suzanne Elston moves from Records to Admissions, Rich Chambers moves from Records to Admissions and Shelly Graff moves from sub to regular in Admissions. In the CMO Laurie Robinson takes on the new Web Site Designer/Co-ordinator position while in LLPA Bonnie Bauder moves from Event Editor to Departmental Assistant. Danica West moves from auxilliary to Theatre Tech effective August 30th. In Site Services George Siklosi moves from weekend BSW in NW to afternoon shift BSW at the DL Campus replacing Dave Seaweed who has moved to the mail room in New West.
