His show, called Backstage, is a selection of images picked from throughout Cooper’s 20 years of capturing dance and theatre on film. Most known for his award-winning work for the Shaw Festival and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Cooper combines the elegance of his subjects with his own surreal imaginings to create distinctive, dream-like images that both entertain and disturb. The Backstage photographs are concerned with aspects of the performing arts usually hidden from the audience. “The show reveals details about how theatre and dance do the things they do, as well as how photographic effects are achieved,” says Cooper. “Each photograph will have a card explaining what is being done in the photo as well as how it was taken. Some of the digital stuff is pretty interesting from both a technical and artistic sense.” Computer-manipulated images will be accompanied by ‘before’ pictures, showing the unaltered photo for comparison purposes. Cooper’s knack for capturing the moment has made him the favored photographer of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Ballet British Columbia, and Les Grands Ballets Canadian, among others. The challenge of capturing quickly moving figures under poor lighting conditions makes dance photography both difficult and rewarding. One of the photos he has chosen for Backstage occurred spontaneously when he brought his infant daughter to a photo session with prima ballerina Evelyn Hart. “T was at the Royal Winnipeg’s practice location, just doing some production photos. Evelyn picked up my daughter, and there it was. Dance is so fleeting, it’s probably the most difficult photography I do.” Backstage will be at the Amelia Douglas Gallery from November 14 to December 20. The public is invited to an opening reception with David Cooper in attendance on November 16 from 4 to 8 pm. Admission is free. For information, call 527-5196. I
