Award Winner continued from page 1 was worried that as an older student, she might not have a lot in com- mon with students who had just graduated from high school. She found, however, that her classmates came from all walks of life and that she fit into campus life comfortably. Andrew Morrison, one of Thran’s professors at the College, says Thran was never a dominant figure in class. “She wasn’t in her shell, but she wasn’t noisy in class either. She’s a self-assured type of in- dividual, with the confidence to accomplish what she set out to do.” But even Thran was surprised by just how much she did ac- complish. “I had no idea | would win an award,” wanted to do my best.” she says. “TI just But the best didn’t come without sacrifice. Thran says she found going back to school fulltime was a big change and a lot of hard work. “In hindsight it wasn’t that bad,” she laughs. “If you'd asked me a few days last year when I was studying, though...” She adds, however, that her husband and children were very supportive while she was back at school, though sometimes it was difficult. “We didn’t do a whole lot of socializing last year.” Thran says the sacrifice was worth it, though. “If it can help anybody else who’s thinking about going back to school, it’s pos- sible, you just have to want to do it.” @
