FIRST FREE CONCERT OF THE FALL Nw at New West, a series of free midday performances at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College, kicks off the fall season on September 8 with a concert highlighting the talents of two ensembles of outstanding student musicians. The concert features the Douglas College Jazz Quintet and the Douglas College Guitar Quartet. The two groups, working independently, spent the past four months presenting shows in a varicty of settings as part of the Challenge 88 student sum- mer employment program. Challenge 88 is a federally administered grant program designed to create summer employment for students in their own ficlds of study. Area administrator Jacqueline Gresko ex- plains, "The students, with the help of their teachers, have developed arts-related projects that extend their education and are of benefit to the community." The students performed at such diverse locations as ex- tended care facilities, the YMCA, the Hyack Festival, com- munity centres, schools, and even on ferries. Guitar instructor Michael Strutt, teacher-sponsor of the guitar quartet, calls the program "a tremendous opportunity" for both the students and their audiences. "In our case," he says, “we have a group who can provide easy-listening music to people who perhaps wouldn’t normally get out to hear music. And it’s wonderful for the musicians; they get paid to play, they learn business and management skills, and it gets them out into the community." The Guitar Quartet includes full-time music students Jeremy Thompson, Peter Adams, Ravi Manhas and Jack CAREER PROFILES FOR WOMEN The Academic Advisors and the Women’s Centre Co-or- dinator in Student Services are offering three Career Profiles for Women during the Fall ’88 Semester. Strutt says, "They are an unusual ensemble of four classical guitarists playing light Spanish and South American repertoire." Members of the Jazz Quintet, the other half of the Noon at New West bill, are Jennifer Sokowan, trumpet; Kevin How, trombone; Rod Henczel, piano; Franz Mehrfert, bass; and Jon Richmond, drums. Their teacher-sponsor, Blair Fisher, says this versatile unit "varied their music depending on the situa- tion. In a seniors’ residence, they would play standards -- recognizable tunes. For the New West Jazz Clinic, they were more adventurous. For senior high schools, they would play funk, latin or fusion. They can do a bit of everything.” A third Challenge 88 performance group came from the Douglas College theatre department. Troupdemotion, a com- pany of five actors, wrote and staged as many as 50 shows at schools, community centres, seniors’ homes and shopping malls throughout the lower mainland. Student manager Grant Patterson says, "We developed four set stories for all age groups, but our main orientation was towards children.” All three groups received exceptionally good response from their audiences. Appreciative letters, telephone calls, and in- vilations to retum were all proof of the program’s success. The public is invited to come out and hear the Jazz Quintet and Guitar Quartet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8 in the Performance Theatre of Douglas College. Admission is free.
