DOUGLAS COLLEGE ARCH ise a ivowo : AD HATTER 3 NISOD 1986 Bill Day has nominated Diana Wegner and Janet Giltrow as Master Teachers to the NISOD 1986 National Conference on Teaching Excellence in Austin, Texas in May 1986. The two instructors from the Communications discipline of the English and Communications Department are nominated to make a presenta- tion titled "The Community as Classroom: Learning at the intersection of College and Community". Gordon Gilgan Dean, Academic Division Note: Abstract on pages 4, 5 and 6 of this edition of the Mad Hatter. 872-5151 After two years of memo writing, phone calls, documentation and discussions with the Health and Safety Committee, I am pleased to hear of their recent decision to change the Medical Emergency telephone number at Douglas College from 526-5111 to 872-5151. For those of you unaware, our current medical emergency number, 526-6111, is that of the fire service not of the ambulance service. I feel very strongly that as a group of students, staff, faculty and admini- strators we should receive medical attention in the case of an emergency from the "experts in the field". The number - 872-5151 - is used province wide to "call for help" in the event of a medical emergency. lapplaud the committee's decision. Gerry Murphy Wantto Spend a year in China? A pilot group of five students from the Accounting and Computer Information Systems disciplines were placed in jobs. To prepare for job placements, students attended a series of work orientation seminars, coordinated by the Co-op Office, including: resume writing, job search tactics and job interview strategies. We intend to expand and diversify the program for the upcoming summer placements to include: Marketing, Computer Science, Criminology, Theatre and Creative Writing. We will be making classroom presentations to students in these program areas in the next few weeks. However, interested students from other discipline or program areas are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted up until February 2\1st. Written information on the program and the roles of faculty, students and employers is being prepared and will be available for distri- bution throughout the college soon. We are currently expanding our employer network. If you know of any employers who may be inter- ested in hiring our students, please contact Barb Franck (2710) or Laurel Norton (2711).
