after a stay in an austere yamabushi
monastery in northern Japan. Let the
reports begin.)

he Hatsu Basho (New Year's
+ Tourney) is fully underway, and

although Akebono has returned
from injury, there is one less American
fighting on the clay this month;
Konishiki has retired.

Hobbled by bad knees and way too
much weight, Konishiki during yet
another rifediocre basho chose to retire.
after an illustrious career. Rather than
head back down to the Makuuchi ranks,
where he was destined to go after a
pending makekoshi (majority losses)
effort'in November, Konishiki cut his
losses after the 14th day, changed his
name and turned in his mawashi. He
will now be known as Sanoyama

Oyakata.

It is sad that the sumo promotion
machine got started when it did. Many
saw Konishiki only after his decline. In
highlight reels, he was often being
swalked out of the ring, almost casually,
by much smaller opponents. Or he was
being hatakikomid (slapped down),
looking pretty ignoble in the process.
And to think, at one time, he was one or
two wins away from becoming -
yokozuna. Whether or not he had the
right stuff seems almost moot now. But
his career would have probably been a
lot shorter than it was had he reached
the top rank. The sumo association
would have forced him out before his
descent, keeping the champion looking
like a champion.

Konishiki was on Larry King, in
magazines, in newspapers, talking about
his accomplishments, his robes covering
his mawashi, his hair slicked back with
pomade, but all people could seem to
notice was his weight. By the time he
quit, he was over 600 pounds. Sure, he

Sumo: Hatsu Basho promising

as a cheap visual bite on Aerosmith
promotional material, for instance, and
was perhaps responsible for the sport-of-
freaks reputation that sumo has over in
North America, but for a foreigner, it
took courage unrivalled by anyone
(other than his mentor and fellow
Hawaiian Takamiyama) to breach the
barriers he did on his way to becoming
ozeki. In the process, he opened up the
sport to foreigners. Akebono and
Musashimaru had better be planning to
buy him one hell of a fruit basket, that’s
for sure.

Musashimaru vs. the Futagoyama stable.
This one is up for grabs.

1998 will be a transitional year for the
sport. Takanohana will continue to
dominate, but Takanonami is starting to
get his act together, as evidenced by his
playoff win against stablemate
Takanohana in November. Wakanohana
may dodge the injury bug, and advance
up the ranks, but he’s a smaller man in a
bigger man’s sport, and doesn't seem to
have Chiyonofuji’s constitutional
endurance to withstand the punishment.
And Musashimaru appears to have added
a dimension to his once monotone
attack. Look for him to become more
deadly.
