Briefly Diana Hiebert, Dental Assisting Coordinator, was presented with a Certificate of Merit from Dr. Robert Rosenstock, President of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC. This award recognizes individuals who have given significant contribution to the dental profession. * Barbara Allen, Commerce and Business Administration instructor, will be tying up her laces and pounding the pavement in August to help fund breast cancer research, education, services and care at the BC Cancer Agency. The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Vancouver August 20-22, 2004. Support Barbara in her bid to bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it. She will be gathering research data for a master’s thesis focused on the sedimentology, stratigraphy and ichnology (trace fossils) of a deltaic succession. Cindy will be returning to the College half-time following the Summer semester and spending the rest of her time at SFU’s Earth Sciences department, where she will be writing her thesis. * The BC Transplant Society will be hosting a registration booth in the concourse at the New Westminster Campus on May 13. Up to four students may be nominated by Douglas College for the National In-Course Awards 2004. Last year Douglas College nominated Christie Ang, General Nursing; Johanna Beemster, University Transfer, Arts; Darren Brow, Sports Science; and Chelsea Weber, Stagecraft. Each of these students received a scholarship worth $4000. The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation offers these scholarships to recognize students mid-way through their program whose excellence has until now gone unrecognized. If you teach students who are active in their communities or in school life, demonstrate the qualities of leadership and significantly contribute to your classroom, consider encouraging them to apply for a National In-Course Award. Her topic was “Leading in the Midst of Change: The Important Role of the Academic Advisor’. Two academic advisors from the College also presented at the Conference. Call Julie Roper at 250-629-6579. ss Meg Stainsby, English instructor, has completed her second Master's degree (SFU) in April, this one in inter-disciplinary Liberal Studies. As a spin-off of this program, Meg has had her first short dramatic piece, Winter Solstice, produced at UBC, and is currently working on several writing projects. * On March 18, Marketing Department instructor Mark Breedveld and a group of five students headed over to Royal Roads University in Victoria where they represented Douglas College at the three-day Royal Roads International Case Competition. The College team placed a respectable 8 out of 11. * Celia Lau, Chemistry lab supervisor, gave birth to baby boy Cameron on Saturday Feb 21, 2004. He weighed 6 Ibs and 15 oz. Celia and her husband Marcus are very happy about the additional member to their family! * Doreen Kreschuk, Site Services Assistant at the David Lam Campus, is a first-time grandparent. Her grandson, Taylor David, 7 Ibs. 13 02., was born 04/ 04/04 at 4:07 am and is the child of Doreen’s son Chad and his partner Misty. Says Doreen: “It isa wonderful feeling being a grandmother, it’s so nice to have a little one in the family again!” * Graeme Bowbrick, Criminology instructor, welcomed twin girls Meredith and Charlotte Hewlett-Bowbrick in March. Apparently he believes he will never sleep again as he now has five children — the first three are boys. * In Student Development, Sarah Bertin moves from BOE to Women’s Centre Coordinator replacing Carolyn Jerome who has taken early retirement. Naseem Babul moves from the New Westminster Campus to the David Lam Campus in DVST replacing Judy Murray who retired April 30 after 23 years with the College. In the CMO, Tana Frie moves from auxiliary to regular as Web Site/ Graphics Specialist, and in Health Sciences Cathy Munro moves from auxiliary to regular as Assistant Nursing Lab Tech replacing Shirley Farrell who has taken early retirement.
