Fund provides training for veterinary nurses Saying goodbye to a beloved animal companion is always difficult. Now you can celebrate your pet’s life or say thank you to a special veterinarian or animal care provider while helping fund an educational program that benefits our animal friends. The AHT Pet Trust provides funds to the Animal Health Technology (AHT) program, located at the David Lam Campus. “The Trust will be used to upgrade our equipment and create scholarships,” says Pauline Chow, AHT instructor. “There's a shortage of trained veterinary paraprofessionals in BC — in fact, we're the only full-time two-year diploma program in the Lower Mainland to offer Shoe-ins for success, (pictured | to r) Eric Faulkner, Mark Delmendo, this training. Our grads will be ready to join the team at local clinics as Animal Health Technologists.” ‘The fund is new, but thanks to donations from friends, clients, College employees and Norco Bikes it already stands at $1,470. All donations by College employees are doubled by matching funds from the College Foundation. As the fund grows, specialized equipment will be purchased for the program, giving students the opportunity to learn and practice a wide variety of necessary skills. Critical Care Fluffy, a life-like cat model currently used in the program, features artificial veins for intravenous and injection work, inflatable lungs for CPR practice, a working bladder for catheterization, and much more. “We'd like to purchase Critical Care Jerry, the dog version, as well as a walk-on scale for our larger patients and a circulating water blanket to safely warm our patients,” says Diane Boyle, AHT instructor. ‘To donate to the AHT Pet ‘Trust or to learn more about the AHT program please contact instructors Diane Boyle or Pauline Chow at 604-777-6231. Donations can also be made by contacting Sarah Lock, Douglas College Foundation Coordinator, at 604-777-6176. a Fie soR ee Sam Si Jia Peng and instructor Laura Byrne. Business students sprint to success Competing against students from universities and colleges in North and Latin America, Douglas College Business students put their best foot forward. Douglas teams captured first and second place in their respective divisions in December's online Business Strategy Game. The two- week event featured students from 237 institutions, predominately North American universities, competing in 20 divisions called “industries”. The simulation placed students in the roles of managers making strategic decisions for athletic footwear companies. ‘The Douglas duo of Yasin Remtulla and Sam Peng won the grand championship in their 11-team industry, outscoring schools such as the University of Guelph and Oklahoma State. The team of Marc Delmendo, Mary Evangelio and Eric Faulkner finished second in their eight-team industry. All of the students are in Accounting Management, except for Faulkner (Commerce and Business Administration). “Our students joined this competition knowing they would not earn grades for their work and that they would be competing during their final-exam period,” says Faculty sponsor Laura Byrne. “The fact that the students addressed these challenges so successfully given such strenuous deadlines is very impressive. They have done Douglas College proud!”
