<3 Mad Hatter Douglas College Newsletter. JULY 9.1986 ASSISTING ENTREPRENEURS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY: THE DOUGLAS CENTRE FOR ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT Canadians, by nature, are a conservative lot: a nation of savers second only to the Swiss, and a country with more lawyers than Japan. Our reputation as a reserved people is well known. Doran McMullin, manager of the Douglas Centre for Enterprise Development, says that Canadian universities and colleges have traditionally taught students to work as either professionals (doctors, lawyers, and engineers) or employees rather than employers. With large corporations streamlining their operations and governments urged to cut costs, many experts believe small business is a means for creating economic growth. McMullin says potential entrepreneurs are benefiting from the Centre located at Douglas College.: During its first five months, the Centre has attracted a client list in excess of 1,200 and has held twelve seminars dealing with small business. In addition, twenty new businesses have been created © following consultation with the Centre. Such businesses include a company that serves beverages through portable kiosks that employs paraplegics, and a tour company that offers excursions to Long Beach and Alert Bay. Funded by the Ministry of Post Secondary Education and the Ministry of Industry and Small Business Development, the Centre acts as a non-profit society separate from existing professional firms, McMullin adds. The Centre's mandate is to assist small business entrepreneurs in planning the expansion of existing businesses and to assist potential entrepreneurs who desire to start a business. "We provide services to both individuals just starting out and to existing businesses," says McMullin, an entrepreneur in his own right and a holder of a Masters Degree in Business Administration. "But we don't want to duplicate services already offered in the community or be in competition with existing professional consulting firms." continued...
