with subject taught. In academics particu-
larly the teaching task includes program
planning, articulation, student interviewing,
individual assistance to students and evalu-
ation of their work, response to technolog-
ical change and many other things. The ap-
proach and what one is prepared to pay for
boils down to the perceived importance of
the student.

We feel that in this period of review, of
retrenchment, evaluation and assessment,
public criticism which destroys confidence
in our institutions and in the teaching pro-
fessions is counter-productive. This is
particularly true in view of the fact that
many of our institutions are engaged in del-
icate negotiations as they explore a variety
of ways of achieving greater efficiency.

The question to be addressed is whether more
will be achieved by public confrontation
than by co-operative planning between admin-
istrators and their faculties and staffs and
between the Minister and the institutions.
We believe the latter and offer our full co-
operation.
