INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / SEPTEMBER 5, 1989 CKNW Orphans’ Fund Sets Up Innovative Bursary at Douglas College There is “light at the end of the tunnel” for many single parent recipients of the newly created CKNW Orphans’ Fund Bursary named in recognition of Erm Fiorillo, a former long term employee of the popular radio Station. New Westminster Judge Thomas Fisher, Chairperson of the CKNW Orphans’ Fund, and Douglas College Foundation chair, Peter Webster, recently an- nounced the creation of the $150,000 endowment fund. The fund will generate over 40 bur- saries a year, which will greatly help support single parents at- tending Douglas College, located in New Westminster and Maple Ridge. The CKNW Orphans’ Fund created the endowment witha $75,000 donation administered and matched by the Douglas College Foundation. The Orphans’ Fund was set up in 1947 to assist two or- phanages, the Loyal Protestant Home and the Catholic Or- phanage in New Westminster. Since that time it has grown and is now supporting over 30 charitable institutions that are involved with helping hand- icapped and disadvantaged children. The reason behind the new bursary, according to Judge Fisher, is that “many disad- vantaged children come from single parent families.” “By helping the parents get the education they need, we will be helping the children,” Fisher said. “The acceptance of Douglas Judge Thomas Fisher (left), chalrperson of the CKNW Orphans’ Fund presents a $75,000 cheque to Peter Webster (right), chalrperson of the Douglas College Foundation.
