The Mad Hatter _A Douglas College Newsletter PERINATAL EDUCATION | PROGRAM INITIATED After two years of discussion, planning and a feasibility study, a two year pilot project in Perinatal Education has been initiated. The program is a joint venture with the Burnaby Health Department and Simon Fraser Health Units and will provide programs on topics ranging from “Planning for Pregnancy” to the needs of new parents: in the post partum period. Most classes will continue to be held in their present community locations. he cooperative arrangement, with louglas College playing a coordinat- ing role, including the establishment of a computerized central registration system, will enable the health depart- ments to focus their resources for maternal child health programs in other directions. Personnel The program becomes part of the Health Education Centre, Community Programs and Services and will be coordinated by Cathie Bissett, RN, BSN, who joins Community Programmers, Rose Marie Fournier and Geraldine Murphy at the Centre. Cathie was formerly a community health nurse with the Burnaby Health Department. She lives in New West- minster with her husband and two children. She has extensive experi- ence in planning and delivering perinatal education programs. Assisting Cathie will be p2rinatal clerk, Helen Gilbertson. Helen will be responsible for registration and the range of clerical functions necessary for the establishment of a new program. She is well qualified for this role having been a C. P. & S. Admis- sions Clerk for the past two years. Helen has a diploma in Records Management from Douglas College and a variety of work experiences in the health field. Local Initiatives Grant for Curri- culum Project Work has been proceeding since Jan- uary 1987 on adapting perinatal curri- culum materials to meet the needs of the program. Perinatal Consultant, Jennifer Warnyca was contracted to work on this project after a LIC Grant was received from the Ministry. Work is to be completed by the end of April and an instructors’ guide which can be used by other colleges in the province will be available. Advisory Committee Representatives from: the health departments, hospitals and other relevant jurisdictions meet regularly to advise curriculum and other apsects of program implementation.
