July 2004 The BC Highland Games Kim Meier David Lam Representative If you've read up on your Canadian history, you know we're not all about the British and French. Many other nations were here for the founding of this rather large country, including the Scottish. Along with their funny hats, skirts, plaid, and haggis, the Scottish brought their traditions. One such tradition was a competition. In the early 1000s, the King of Scotland began hosting games. Winners would be honoured with positions in the King’s personal guard. Since then, these games have been continued, whether as celebrations of victory or commemorations of events. June 26 of this year marked the 73rd annual BC Highland Games, put on by the United Scottish Cultural Society. This celebration of Scottish Heritage included athletic competitions, dances, and whiskey tasting. Participants could be seen tossing hammers, weights, cabers, sheaves, and Braemar stones. Bagpipes and drums could be heard miles from the event's site, Coquitlam Town Centre. There was also an Old English Car Show, a Clan March, and my personal favorite: a beer tent.
