October Sports Wrap-up “Grizz” and friend at October's Pep Rally for Athletics and Intramurals. Golf After dominating the BCCAA golf scene for five years, the Douglas College golf team had to settle for third place this season. With an all-rookie lineup, it was difficult to keep pace with the experienced Camosun College team, who captured the title. Entering the final 36-hole tournament at Nanaimo Golf and Country Club October 12-13, Camosun held a comfortable six-stroke lead in the team competition. The real battle was for second and third place, with only three strokes separating University College of the Cariboo, Malaspina University College and Douglas College. By the time the last putt dropped, Cariboo was four strokes ahead of Douglas College to clinch second place, while the Royals edged Malaspina by two. Okanagan University College took fifth. Craig Wilkinson of Camosun won the individual aggregate for the four 36-hole tournaments with a stroke average of 75 per round. Jarrod Boddy of Douglas College finished second in the individual aggregate with a stroke average of 77 per ‘round. Volleyball Taking the bronze at the Kings Challenge Cup, their first tournament of the season, pleased Douglas College men’s volleyball coach Brian Newman. “Tt was a good opportunity to evaluate players and to compare ourselves with the top college teams in Canada,” he said. The Royals beat Mount Royal College 3-1 (15-9, 12-15, 15-9, 15-7) in the bronze medal match, after losing in straight sets to University of Alberta 3-0 (15-10, 15-8, 15-11) in the semi-final. Red Deer won the tournament. Basketball Douglas College Royals men’s basketball team took all three of their games at the Meet in the Middle exhibition tournament in Golden this month. The squad posted a perfect record, beating Lethbridge, Grand Prairie, and University College of the Cariboo, coming from behind to win the last two games. Lee Craven led the team in scoring in two of the victories. The Royals women’s basketball team lost three out of four matches, finishing fifth at the South Alberta Institute of Technology Basketball Tournament in Calgary October 25-26. Inconsistent play plagued the Royals, who managed to shoot more than 40 percent from the field in only one game. Jasmine Foreman, top scorer for the Royals, was named to the All Star team. Badminton The Douglas College badminton team placed third at the first of four BCCAA tournaments, winning two of a possible five events. Returning after a one-year absence, Julia Chen took the women’s singles title, while Jennifer Wong and Elizabeth Yeun won the women’s doubles.
