Smiley happy people Dental Assisting Program student Kristy Schneiber lends a hand and a supportive smile to a patient. They came, they cleaned, they extracted. Students and instructors from the Dental Assisting Program teamed up with volunteer dentists, dental assistants and hygienists at the New Westminster Campus to tend to a wide range of dental needs at Community Dental Day on April 25. The care provided to nearly 80 patients included root canals, fillings, extractions, pain relief and emergency care. This was the fifth year the College took part in the program. Organized by the BC Dental Association, the event gives a helping hand to low-income working adults who are not able to access regular dental care. “It's a wonderfully rewarding day,” says Dental Assisting Program Coordinator Debbie McCloy. She hopes it sets the stage for students to “value community contributions throughout their careers.” “It’s a wonderful chance for the profession to give to the community and for members of the community to access care that is not otherwise available to them. ‘The student volunteers see a wide range of services and have to operate at a real-time pace. They find it challenging and the appreciative responses from patients are tremendous confidence builders,” says McCloy.
