ree las College CJjPers find ‘keys’ to success hose heading back to computer work-stations this fall may notice their fingers flying a little faster across the keys, thanks to the efforts of students in the Consumer and Job Preparation Program. This summer, several groups of CJP students have been hard at work cleaning and polishing New Westminster Campus computers, from labs to faculty/employee workroom to the library. The project came about after Computer Support Services Manager Mark Coumont suggested the annual cleaning job be posted as student employment. Coordinated by Jean Emmerson and Yvonne Stephens, CJP students won the contract, with Computer Technician Kerry Wong providing training and additional supervision. “This has been a first for us,” says Wong. “And we’re very pleased with the outcome. We find that people take better care of cleaner machines, so our high- usage areas have really benefited. And while they’re cleaning, the students note any missing components or problems that we wouldn’t ordinarily know about until the September rush.” While on contract with the College, the students have been learning valuable job skills such as punctuality, thoroughness, and the importance of teamwork. “This is the first time many of these students have earned a paycheque,” says Stephens. “It’s been a pretty exciting challenge for them to take on.” J SIDE David Lam Campus update David Lam Campus staff Centre 2000 Black Tie & Sneakers Briefs INside Zone Carol Wenman of Consumer and Job Preparation gets down to business as part of the “clean team” maintaining computer work-stations around the College this summer.
