DOUGLAS COLLEGE LIBRARY, ARCHIVES 6 - SPORTS NEWS Volleyball: The Douglas College men's and women's volleyball teams completed their Totem Conference schedules for the season by competing in tournaments on Saturday hosted by V.C.C. and B.C.I.T. respectively. In men's play Douglas won 4 games out of 8 and finished fifth overall for the season among the 9 competing colleges. In women'splay Douglas defeated Malaspina College while issing to V.cuc., B.C. I.P. yp and Capitan. Rugby: Douglas College narrowly defeated Simon Fraser University in an exciting F.V.R.U. third division match at Central Valley on Saturday, February 23, by a score of 7-6. After S.F.U. led 3-0 for most of the first half, on a penalty goal, Len Lemieux tied it up for Douglas just before the half on a 35-yard penalty goal. Play continued to be fast and furious between these old rivals in the second half with neither team really having the upper hand. Midway through the second half, however, Eioin White playing at standoff burst through the S.F.U. defences and sent Rod Jack away with a pinpoint pass to score the winning try. The York University rugby team will be touring B.C. in March. They play B.C.I.T. on Sunday, March 9, before taking on Douglas College on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Queens Park Stadium. Badminton: The Douglas College badminton team competed in the Totem Conference badminton championships on Friday, February 22, and came away with a gold, two silver and one bronze medal. The gold medal was won by Marlene Scheelar, as she easily outplayed her opponents to win the women's singles. In ladies' doubles Pat Zawaduk and Sue Caldwell won the silver medal for Douglas, while Greg Bridges and Laci Bujdos won the bronze medal for Douglas in the men's doubles. Vancouver Community College won the gold medal in the overall team standings with 39 points, while Douglas shared the silver medal with Malaspina at 33 points each.
