TO: MAD HATTER It is with pleasure that I announce that I have approved the following requests for Educational Leave which were recommended to me by the Educational Leave Sub-Committee of the Faculty Development Committee: Ron Johnson Engineering Science Liz Peerless Social Sciences Harry Dickson English & Com. Ed Biggs Social Sciences Roy Duggan English & Com. Okon Udokang Liberal Arts Ron plans to enrol in five computer science courses at SFU. Successful completion will enable him to design and teach a programming course for science students. Liz proposes to: - investigate the feasibility of establishing a field centre in B.C. - do research into the historical geography of the Lower Fraser Valley and B.C. Harry plans to spend his leave on a literary tour of England, visiting the settings of many of the novels he teaches, the homes of the novelists, and the centres of research that help to keep these subjects alive. He will also gather teaching aids and resource materials. Ed proposes to spend his leave working ina psychological clinic where assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and counselling of individuals are provided. Since Roy is becoming increasingly involved in the teaching of American Literature and History, he will travel extensively in the U.S. observing the "grass-roots" of American society as well as attending numerous cultural and historical events during the Bicentennial Year. He will also visit a variety of post-secondary institutions. Okon plans to make an in-depth study of a selected number of UN functional institutions devoted to problems of international development, trade and cultural exchanges. The information gained will be reflected in the courses he teaches. During his educational leave he will visit ,Ethiopia, Senegal, and Ottawa.
