Back to School Basics for the Boys: How to shop and what to shop for to get the right attention this fall” By Stephanie Trembath, Life and Style Editor hen it comes to putting together an eye-catching outfit, it’s all in the little details; especially for men. While women have the option of using make-up, hair products and a multitude of accessories to jazz up a simple t-shirt and jeans, guys are given less options. Men have to make bold choices in color, pattern and texture to make a statement and stand out. This year men’s fashion has leaned towards a gentleman’s style; opting for a fresher, more classical look. Light cardigans over collared shirts, dark blazers, and skinny ties all set the tone for a year full of refined dress. However, it’s not to say that guys have to wear a dress shirt everyday to look good, rather, it’s the exact opposite. A heavy contrast has become the modern muse, which means that scruffy jeans can be worn with a blazer, and sports jackets are paired with ties over denim shirts. Stripes are big this season; thicker striped cardigans in muted or bright colors under a blazer or winter jacket are the way to go, but if you’re on a smaller budget just find a pair of striped socks to peek out from under the cuff of your jeans. Yellow, forest life and styie green, grey, and muted orange are the signature colors this fall. Thankfully they all go well together so mixing up different tones and textures in your wardrobe should be easy. In retrospect, buying cheap t-shirts, jeans, dress pants and jackets is fine; the 80’s look is still popular and a somewhat dishevelled appearance is rugged and handsome. However, a cheap sweater doesn’t look retro or take on the appearance of vintage. It just looks cheap. A few key pieces that you cannot imitate and need to splurge on include a nice watch, shoes and bag to carry books or a laptop in. Although men won’t notice that your watch is made of plastic and you’re wearing shoes that may have been white, females do. And trust me; living in a pair of skate shoes and a hockey jersey does not endear us to date you. A guy who looks polished doesn’t necessarily need to dress expensively; it’s in the details that we ladies look for.
