the other press Sports Jordan Cripps Sports Editor Now that the Olympic plebiscite has come and gone, with 64 percent of Vancouverites in favour of the Olympics coming to Vancouver, I’ve been hearing that we're definitely the front-runners to host the games. It does feel strange“to me that we can get just over 60 per- cent support for the bid and the exercise is labeled a tremendous success. If I were one of the stakeholders, I would be hoping for 70 or 80 percent support from the people because this would be an indicator of the amount of support the games would get should they actually be given to Vancouver. At the same time, though, I think that the excitement of the event itself and the peer pres- sure factor will probably work in the games’ favour bring- ing out even the people that are, right now completely opposed to the Olympics coming to Vancouver. It seems a bit funny to me that 91 percent of Canadians are in favour of the Olympics. What's funny, I suppose, is that this “support” for the games will not affect the majority of this 91 percent. That’s not to say that their opinions don't matter; I just hope that when it comes time to vote for the games, the IOC doesn’t pay too much attention to this perspective. I would be interested in knowing more about the demographics of these polls to see just how much of that percentage is from British Columbians that would have their lives impacted for two weeks in 2010. Having said this, I’m not opposed to having the games here, I’m just not as gung-ho as some people seem to be. I think it would be exciting to sit in GM Place and watch Team Canada take on Sweden or Russia. Itd also be entertaining to change the channel whenever figure skat- http://otherpress.douglas.bc.ca Olympics Require Many Considerations ing or curling came on. At the same time, I think that there is the potential for solutions to some of the prob- lems we're facing in BC right now to be solved with the Olympics as the prime consideration rather than the hun- dreds of years that will hopefully follow those two weeks in February 2010. One problem that I have with the “no” contingent is their complete focus on Gordon Campbell’s government as their reason for opposing the Olympics. Yes, the cur- rent state of British Columbia is a result of the decisions made by Campbell’s government, and I’m certainly not going to support any of these decisions, but at the same time, there are a number of other considerations that need to be made regarding the viability of the Olympics in Vancouver. For me, viability is the biggest concern. What will need to be done to make the games happen? What infrastructure will need to be built? Who will be doing the building? Who will be paying for these adapta- tions? The most common example of this is the develop- ment of a better road to Whistler. Every possible sugges- tion for implementing this road has been introduced and met with strong opposition from many different camps. I agree with the people that believe a new road needs to be built. It’s just a matter of how and when would be an appropriate time. I’m not sure that the current environ- ment in British Columbia satisfies this idea. Yes, the gov- ernment is involved in this issue, but a number of inter- ested parties have come out of the woodwork and made their presence known about this issue. Which is just one of many that will need to be answered should Vancouver be granted the 2010 Olympics. Mach 5, 2003 2010 VANCOUVER classifieds Students advertise for free!
