; Tas a Canadian by Tim Crumley Better late than never, I guess. I would have done this review much sooner had I actually had a tape in my clenched and clammy hands. But as we all know, everyone and their dog has to write a bloody Christmas card, so I don’t see the tape until December. But never fear! The good news is here! Oggy music is playing - have egg nog and cheer! It Came From Canada #5 is Og’s latest attempt to subvert the minds of Canadian youth. There’s 18 tracks from 18 different bands, and most of it is really neat. There are some priceless tracks here, i Seen S mostly from ’stars’ of the under- ground. Deja Voodoo, as always, is up to form, delivering us "Let Elvis Die": "He isn’t in a shopping mall/He isn’t everywhere/He’s down in the ground with worms in his hair..." Excellent tracks also in- clude Chris Houston’s "Stupid TV Christians" and "Catch A Cow" by Gordie Gordo and the G-Men. One the few tracks I didn’t enjoy was “Bureaucrat From Hell" by The Desmonds. They obviously haven’t heard The Cramps’ "New Kind Of Kick". I like it when people borrow, but they didn’teven bother changing key. Geez... Se ee oP” udgeabilly ee Why Day More? Be- cause Og is a Montreal label (run by Tony Dewald and Gerard Van Herk, both of Deja Voodoo), they mostly got Eastern Canadian bands. But as they got bigger, and were able to get out here more often, the number of Western Canadian bands has risen sharply. For instance, The Vindicators are from Calgary, Chris Houston lives in Vancouver, and Victoria’s 64 Funnycars are on this tape too. And lest we forget, the Hardrock Miners (yes, Isabella Rosellini’s favorite band) make an unforgettable ap- pearance on this record with "Third Person". And no, that sentence wasn’t just an excuse to write the name "Isabella Rosselini’. The music has diversified con- siderably as. well. The sludgeabil- ly/punk/garage thing is still there, - but you can definitely see the dis- tillations coming out, especially with the Vindicators and The Gruesomes’ "You Weren’t Using Your Head." They even get really folksy with the Hardrock Miners around. So what can I say? This is a great tape. It may not be easy to find, so if you’re looking, try Track Records or Black Swan or some- thing. Did you say you wanted to know how many stars it got??? You’re a bright person. Buy the tape and figure it out yourself. by Spencer Toyne On the evening of December 8, ‘1989, the world premier prefor- mance of David Maclntyre’s Sanctuary was held at the Van- couver East Cultural Center. The intent was to write a modern opera which would be relevant to contemporary urban society and at- tempt to challenge the conventions of the art form. As this project progressed, Maclntyre recognized the musical content as being more suited to sheer musical perfor- mance, and this is how it was ul- timately presented. The operatic beginnings of Sanctuary, however, are still evi- dent in its present form. Due to the | strikingly unconventional concepts of its performance, the musicians and conductor were unusually theatrical in their presentation. © Sanctuary, scored for string or- chestra and boy soprano, comes to life a player at a time, each situated at various points throughout the audience. Soon the boundary be- tween the performers and audience disolves in the music, reshaping the very foundation of accepted perfor- mance practice. As a result, the conducting of Owen Underhill was made much more dramatic as he cued his musicians in all directions around him. Also, depending on momen anctiary isa Revolutionary Opera where a spectator is seated during the 85 minutes of its duration, the experience will differ substantially. The music itself is by and large neo-classical in style, and due to its highly expressive nature, is filled with social comment. The intermit- tant use of boy soprano - admirably’ performed for one so young by Scott Shymko - contributes to these gnificantly. aspects of the music si; All the many compositional techni- ques manifested in the work would indicate that MacIntyre has no restrictions on his sources of in- fluence when composing.
