Lillian Zimmerman, Chair Arts Exhibition Advisory Committee Seed Money Grant Awarded Dr. Melody Hessing, contract instructor, Social Sciences at Douglas College, and Lillian Zimmerman, Community Programs and Services, have been awarded a Seed Money Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in the amount of $5,000. The Grant was awarded in the Family and Socialization of Children category of the Strategic Grants Division of the 8.8.B.R.C, The Research Proposal which Melody and Lillian will work on is THE FAMILY AND WORKING LIFE IN CANADA. As stated in the proposal: "This research proposal is intended to generate discussion on the intersection between work and family life and to formulate a research proposal in that area. We are particularly concerned with the impact of work on family life, the constraints and Contradictions inherent in the lives of working mothers and the influence of family needs on labour force participation. Among those issues which need to be addressed are the following: How and at what cost is the "normalization of the double day" (Glazer 1980) being accomplished. What models of the world of work are being effected for Canadian children How is the quality of family life in Canada affected by working parents? What are the implications for the development of Canadian social policy and social support targeted at the working family?" The seed money grant is earmarked to allow the researchers to design a research project, which can then be submitted to the 8.8.H.R.C. Douglas College will be the institutional base for administration of these funds. Helpli eipling "Helpline" will be a referral service for students who are undergoing a crisis in their lives, and are in need of help in one form or another. Our Helpline Co-ordinator will be available to assist students in finding the agency or service best suited to provide the type of help appropriate to their particular problem. The idea for this project resulted from a meeting between the staff of the Douglas College Counselling department and the Executive of the Student Society. Originally, the meeting had been called to establish the parameters of the Student Society Ombudsoffice. What resulted was the identification of a very real need among students; specifically, as students are often unaware of the resources which are available to them in times of crisis, and are more likely to seek advice and assistance from their peers, we recognized the need to provide a student run referral service. Helpline was born of this recognition. For their part in bringing this project into being, 1 would like to acknowledge the support of the Work Study Program Committee, whose favorable evaluation of the project resulted in making the funding available. 1 would also like to acknow- ledge the contribution of the Counselling Department, whose input, co-operation and promise of future support will make Helpline a SUCCESS.
