Welcoming the world International students and instructors seeking to enhance their English skills and broaden their academic horizons are choosing Douglas College. Through innovative programs such as The Summer English Language Institute and customized ESL programs, students from Japan, Korea and China are getting the opportunity to build communication skills. This year, the Summer English Language Institute welcomes Japanese students from three Douglas College-partnered institutions—Momoyama Gakuin (St. Andrew’s) University, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies and the University of Kitakyushu— for short-term ESL programs. Students from the Catholic University of Pusan (Korea) are also completing a four- week ESL program over June and July. Not only are students learning about English, foreign instructors are also coming to Douglas College to pursue professional development Opportunities. Teachers from China's Heilongjiang Institute of Technology (HIST) will arrive this summer for a four-week professional development program in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. In the Fall, thanks to new government and institutional agreements, 13 students from China's Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) will arrive at the College while three Douglas students embark on studies in Beijing. Mexican students are also eligible to study here, following four affiliation agreements signed in that country in April. The agreement opens access to 45,000 students for English- language training based in tourism and international business. Douglas College continues to take new steps to recognize the achievements of employees. CFCS Associate Dean announced _ Gary Tennant has been appointed Associate Dean of Child, Family and Community Studies (CFCS). Tennant has been a faculty member in the Child and Youth Care (CYC) Department since 1981 | and has served as CYC program coordinator for a number of terms. “Gary brings a wealth of experience in curriculum, program development, community projects _and has served in a variety of ways on cross-college initiatives,” says Jan Carrie, Dean of CFCS. _ Tennant is also a member of the Applied Degree Standards Sub-Committee. His position as _ Associate Dean begins on September 1.
